INSIDE MY STUDIO

My studio.

My recording equipment, instruments and production workflow.

01 / PRODUCE

The heart.

Apple Mac mini
M4 Pro · 2024
Universal Audio
Apollo Twin X · Gen 2

02 / RECORD

My voice.

Neumann TLM 103 — my vocal microphone.

I use the TLM 103 for my vocal recordings.

K&M 25600

Qualität und Stabilität — damit mein Mikrofon zuverlässig an seinem Platz bleibt.

03 / LISTEN

How I listen.

Neumann NDH 30
Mixing & Mastering
Sony MDR-M1
Aufnahme

05 / ARCHIVE

Previous gear

I would rather have one instrument that fits me 100% than ten expensive ones that sit unused or feel uncomfortable — regardless of the price.

06 / PROCESS

Behind the sound.

This is what currently works for me.

A starting point, shaped by each recording. Take what helps and build your own version — the tools support the song.

DAW / Workflow

Logic Pro

I record, arrange and mix in Logic Pro. UAD and Waves Ultimate form the core, with selected tools from Softube, FabFilter, Maag Audio, Sonnox, Valhalla and Cableguys.

Start with the performance, listen in context, then make only the changes the song needs.

Favorite Vocal Chain

A typical direction, not a fixed recipe. Each stage depends on the voice and recording; settings change from song to song.

  1. Recording front end

    UAD / Unison Neve 1073

Musical preamp character and a little harmonic colour at the recording stage.

  2. 01 / Cleanup

    Waves Clarity Vx

Reduce unwanted room and background information naturally, before heavier processing.

  3. 02 / Gentle compression

    Softube Tube-Tech CL 1B

A soft first stage of level control that keeps the vocal moving.

  4. 03 / Corrective EQ

    FabFilter Pro-Q 4

Address resonances and low-mid buildup only where the recording needs it.

  5. 04 / Peak control

    1176-style compression

Catch faster peaks and bring energy and presence to the vocal.

  6. 05 / Leveling

    LA-2A-style compression

Smooth and level the result, adding body and cohesion where appropriate.

  7. 06 / Sibilance

    De-Esser

Control excessive sibilance while preserving clarity.

  8. 07 / Optional tone

    Pultec / Maag-style EQ

Musical finishing colour, openness or air when needed. No automatic high-frequency boost.

Favorite Vocal Bus

The individual tracks already carry the sound. The bus helps the layers feel like one performance.

  1. 01 / Broad shaping

    SSL EQ

Musical midrange and presence decisions across the vocal stack.

  2. 02 / Gentle glue

    SSL-style Bus Compression

Subtle cohesion and movement, without flattening the performance.

  3. 03 / Optional saturation

    Black Box Analog Design HG-2MS

After bus compression, I can use the HG-2MS for additional harmonic colour and density. The amount depends on the recording.

  4. 04 / As needed

    Broad tonal EQ

SSL, Pultec-style or another musical EQ for the overall balance.

  5. 05 / Optional polish

    Air / Presence

Maag-style air or another tonal tool, only if the stack needs openness.

Subtle saturation can add character when the song calls for it. It is optional.
