DEAR MR. K

Behind the songs

A personal project about relationships, expectations and understanding.

Parts 1–10 tell one connected story. For the mixtape, I chose Parts 1–4 and Part 7. Dear Mr. K begins with a question; Part 10 is my final answer. Perhaps the way to the answers was never somewhere out in the world, but closer to ourselves.

Writing & rewriting

The associations, sketches, storylines, thoughts and images began with me. The final written wording was refined with help; it is not exclusively my own. While recording, I rewrote entire parts and sequences. The lyrics below preserve the written version and its original intention, so they can differ from the recording.

Recording & finding the sound

The recording and editing process felt like an odyssey: intermediate parts bounced out of alignment, beat sequences were lost, and lyrics disappeared from the final master of “In Times”. Choosing the tracks that meant the most to me was part of that process. It deepened my respect for independent artists.

I recorded the vocals in summer with the Shure SM7B, shaped by what I knew at the time. For mixing, I used the Neumann NDH 30, with Neumann RIME and CLA Nx as references. These tracks close a period of practice and mark the point from which my voice, pronunciation and production can keep growing.

Original English lyrics · Written version

I know that you tried, darling. I know that you did fight, darling. But when the cold gets loud, darling. Let the rain fall light, darling. I know where you wanna go. The way that I did ever show. For someone to get a hold. And I’ve been saying for too long. Let it rain, let it pass. Some things change, some things last. No hard feelings, no parade. Step by step, on your way. Let it breathe, let it be. Ain’t no need to disagree. I moved quiet, not away. That’s all it means, Dear Mr. K. Snow-white city, let the rain wash away the cold. White on the windows, white on the ways that we cope. Angels on the corner selling heaven for a hope. Some pray with their hands, some pray not to feel low. I’ve seen halos turn to smoke under street lights. Good kids lose their names tryna feel alright. Everybody wants a door when the room feels tight. But not every key was made to lead you to some light, like. You gave me a keychain, I kept it like a sign. Funny how keys open doors, but some close with time. I held on to the metal like it still knew the way. But some gifts turn to mirrors when there’s nothing left to say. Arriving at a place where the prince stayed unknown. I opened up the gates like I had nothing to own. No debt in what I gave, no favor to be shown. Just love inside my hands while the strings moved on their own. Dear Mr. K. I hope you’ll never look the other way. I’m trying to show love, not persuade. I nourish all the hope, not the hate. No smoke, no drink, no dope will erase pain. I hope you’ll never look the other way. I’m trying to show love, not persuade. I nourish all the hope, not the hate. No smoke, no drink will erase pain. Sometimes I wonder if anybody else was seeing. The shift when I changed ambition into meaning. From chasing into being. From bracing into breathing. From needing them to see me. Into seeing what I’m needing. Lemme show you how deep a story can go. How deep a human gets when you thought you knew their soul. How deep the woman in your arms is beyond what you hold. How many flowers go unseen when they quietly grow. I made room for your people off the strength of your word. Didn’t ask where they came from, didn’t question what I heard. If your heart called them family, I received them with grace. ’Cause I saw a part of you in every unfamiliar face. They ask a couple drinks for a cup of hope. Got a couple friends that sell you bags of whatever you want. And some in sales sold their heart for whatever they bought. I just watched the same pain change clothes when it walked. I learned anger ain’t the enemy, it tells you what you value. But numbness wears a smile when the heart don’t wanna count it. Everybody got a truth, but the truth got layers. Some pray for understanding, some just practice their prayers. Everybody that you ask gon’ say he loves me. But who ever took the time to get to know me? Really know me, the part of you I want you’d show me. But I guess that’s ‘cause their narrative’s their own story. To brag with tales of a different man’s glory. My brother just went gold with a sample for Tory. I watch people hide their bruises inside their Lanez. ’Cause no one ever bothered to know ’em beyond their names. But I guess these are luxury problems. ‘Cause if you ain’t got no good, you got none to be bothered. Even so-called wealth can leave you weathered, not watered. While the ones who weren’t lucky still grew from what life offered. Maybe the way I show love and who I love is unconventional. But at least the way I show love is intentional. I choose to live by choice, not by chance — it’s dimensional. And that’s why in everything I do I tryna be exceptional. Dear Mr. But remember where we came from, brother. I can let it rain, brother. Out there ain’t much love. So I take all of the blame, brother. Aren’t we the same, brother. I always wish you peace, brother. Chose silence when it’s loud. But I didn’t leave my seat, brother. I ain’t write this to win, I wrote this to make clear. I was never hard to reach, I was always standing near. If love has to scream, then it wouldn’t be sincere. I got quiet so the truth could be the loudest thing you hear. Dear Mr.
